With a sometimes controversial history, including changes in format and even legal battles over the 1987 champion, the truth is that the tournament has won the hearts of Brazilians with thrilling matches and unforgettable stars, solidifying itself as one of the most competitive leagues in the world.

Origin and evolution of the Brazilian Football Championship:
In 1971, the Brazilian Sports Confederation (CBD) officially organized the Campeonato Brasileiro, establishing it as a national tournament. Initially called the Campeonato Nacional de Clubes, it featured twenty teams divided into two groups of ten, with the top six from each group advancing to the next phase.
Before this official organization in 1971, there were already tournaments that brought together teams from different Brazilian states. The Taça Brasil, launched in 1959, brought together state champions in a knockout-style competition. In 1967, the Torneio Roberto Gomes Pedrosa, also known as “Robertão,” expanded club participation and served as a transitional competition leading to the format adopted in 1971.
In 2010, the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) officially recognized the Taça Brasil and the Torneio Roberto Gomes Pedrosa (1959–1970) as equivalent to the Campeonato Brasileiro, granting the title of Brazilian champions to the winners of those tournaments.
The final step in the unification of Brazilian Championship titles occurred in 2023, when the CBF recognized the Torneio dos Campeões, held in 1937, as an official Campeonato Brasileiro title, granting an additional championship to Atlético Mineiro.
